New Zealand Geotechnical Society (NZGS)
The New Zealand Geotechnical Society (NZGS) is the affiliated organisation in New Zealand of the International Societies representing practitioners in soil mechanics, rock mechanics and engineering geology. Full members of the NZGS must be affiliated to at least one of these societies.
NZGS is also affiliated to the Engineering New Zealand as one of its collaborating technical societies.
The aims of the Society are:
- To advance the education and application of soil mechanics, rock mechanics and engineering geology among engineers and scientists.
- To advance the practice and application of these disciplines in engineering.
- To implement the statutes of the respective international societies in so far as they are applicable in New Zealand.
- To ensure that the learning achieved through the above objectives is passed on to the public as is appropriate.

Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS)
The Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS) was founded in 1970, originating from the National Committee on Soil Mechanics of the Institution of Engineers Australia (est. 1953) and the call for a corresponding society in rock mechanics. In 1973, the society was expanded to include the third discipline of engineering geology and has remained substantially unchanged since that date. In 2025, the AGS formally became a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee, while maintaining its affiliation with Engineers Australia as an incorporated learned society. This governance transition provides the AGS with a formal legal foundation and modern governance structure, while ensuring autonomy and continuity in serving its members.
